Adventist Health Names New Portland President and CEO

PORTLAND, Ore.—Adventist Health announced today that David Russell will become the new president and CEO of Adventist Medical Center and Adventist Health Medical Group in Portland, effective Aug. 15, 2016.

Russell currently serves as senior vice president and chief operating officer under CEO Joyce Newmyer, who will retain her position as president of the Pacific Northwest Region. She has been filling both roles concurrently, dividing her time between the hospital and her duties as the regional president. This leadership change will allow both Newmyer and Russell to focus on their respective roles. Adventist Health’s Pacific Northwest Region includes four hospitals in Oregon, Washington and Hawaii, and a network of nearly 50 medical clinics.

“David and I have worked closely on the strategic vision and operational direction of Adventist Health in Portland while leading our team to some of the highest levels of clinical quality in the state,” says Newmyer. “He is an experienced administrator and I am confident that under his leadership, our patients, medical care providers and team members will reach new levels of clinical excellence and quality of care.”

Russell has worked at Adventist Health in Portland for 13 years. Prior to being senior vice president and chief operating officer, he was vice president for marketing and business development. He has also served as the director of contracting and network development for Adventist Health’s Healthcare Resources Northwest. His extensive experience is centered on high-quality, whole-person care with an emphasis on improving the health of surrounding communities.

“It’s a tremendous honor to carry on the Adventist Health mission of healing ministry  and I look forward to our continued leadership in transforming health in the state of Oregon,” says Russell.

Russell received his master’s degree in healthcare administration from Loma Linda University School of Public Health and his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Walla Walla University. He is also a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. He has served as board chair for the North Clackamas Chamber of Commerce, and currently represents Adventist Health as an active member of the Portland Business Alliance. He is also highly involved in his church community.

Russell and his wife, Debbie, live in Gresham and have two adult children and three grandchildren.
