    PORTLAND, Oregon Adventist Health Portland and OHSU today announced a final agreement to integrate their clinical activities and services in the Portland metropolitan area through an affiliation that becomes effective Jan. 1, 2018.  

    This agreement makes OHSU and Adventist Health Portland part of the same Portland metropolitan Health System, bringing Adventist’s health care enterprise that includes a 302-bed medical center, 34 medical clinics and home care and hospice services in the Portland-Vancouver metro area.

    “Our affiliation brings together the strength of a respected community hospital system in the metro Portland area with that of the only academic health center in Oregon,” said OHSU President Joe Robertson, M.D., M.B.A.  “The focus Adventist Health Portland has put on quality care and preventive medicine in its community is especially well-regarded and complementary to OHSU’s mission.”  

    Under this affiliation, OHSU and Adventist Health Portland will share a bottom line and operate as a unified system. The affiliation applies to OHSU’s Portland-area clinical services and activities, and Adventist Health Portland, which includes Adventist Health Portland Medical Center and its affiliated clinics, centers and services. The agreement does not include OHSU’s research and education missions, nonmetro clinical activities and services, and the other 19 Adventist Health hospitals in the western United States. Each organization will retain its existing hospital licenses, capital assets and employees.

    “We look forward to joining the OHSU family and expanding our focus on impacting lives with high-value, quality whole-person care,” said Joyce Newmyer, president of Adventist Health Pacific Northwest Region. “We are confident this affiliation will have a positive impact on patients throughout the state.”

    A board of managers comprising representatives from each organization will be created to oversee the system. David Russell, president of Adventist Health Portland, will report to Mitch Wasden, Ed.D., executive vice president and chief executive officer of OHSU Healthcare as well as to Newmyer. Adventist Health Portland chief medical officers will report to Russell and John Hunter, M.D.,F.A.C.S., Chief Clinical Officer, OHSU.

    Each entity will continue to maintain their individual mission and culture but will together transform access and the delivery of health to Oregonians through a unified clinical enterprise and shared brand experience.

    “We are excited to provide an integrated delivery system that will improve access, create better outcomes and control costs by coordinating care for patients across a spectrum of their health needs,” said Wasden.

    To my fellow East Portland Chamber Members:

    You know that I’ve been working on the Upper Garden project and particularly the Aerial Treewalk at Leach Garden for seven years.  I do this in the spirit of Lilla and John Leach who created their gardens and home and gave them to the residents of Portland.  They wanted to ensure that new generations of visitors would delight in discovering the plant world in a magical place of beauty and respite.

    The Garden opened to the public 34 years ago in East Portland. But the Leach estate was limited in its ability to welcome large numbers of visitors. With the future in mine, land has been acquired in anticipation of this project. Now we are ready to meet today’s challenge--We need your help to build the Aerial Treewalk, a unique feature in the region where anyone can become truly immersed in nature and the outdoors, safely and accessibly.

    So I am writing to ask that you join me—however you can—to make this dream project a reality.  We have just launched a crowdfunding campaign to give everyone in our community a chance to make this happen for all of us—Portlanders and visitors, young and old, newly-arrived or longtime residents.  The new facilities and gardens at Leach will insure that it continues to be a place like no other.

    Will you do two things on behalf of the Garden?   Will you click on the link to the crowdfunding page and make a contribution?  Leach Garden Friends has successfully raised over $ 1 million toward this project.   We are confident we will break ground and build the Treewalk and new gardens midyear in 2018.

    Secondly—and maybe most important—will you forward this email to your circle of friends and family and encourage them to take a look at the crowdfunding link?   Even if they don’t know about Leach, I think they will be intrigued because of the unique story of the Leaches and the character of this unexpected gem in the urban landscape.

    Portland Parks & Recreation’s Portland Public Golf and KemperSports will host the Colwood Golf Center’s Grand Reopening on Sunday, July 30, 2017. The free, family-friendly event at the popular City of Portland golf course and event site (7313 NE Columbia Blvd.) is free for guests of all ages. Enjoy free range balls and rounds of golf, golf lessons; meet our friendly staff, enjoy food, music, and more!

    “Colwood Golf Center is a tremendous site for relaxation and recreation for people of all ages and backgrounds,” says Portland Parks & Recreation Director Mike Abbaté. “And it is a real asset for both the Cully neighborhood and the City as a whole. We are excited to welcome everyone to the grand opening and invite everyone to play anytime at Colwood or any other Portland Public Golf course. We offer fun and challenging amenities and courses for everyone, whether they’re an experienced golfer or someone who’s never picked up a club. And we make golf affordable for all Portlanders.”

    Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R), in partnership with the Trust for Public Lands, acquired a portion of the former Colwood National Golf Course in 2014, and began redeveloping the property into a unique golf and environmental asset for Portlanders. The driving range and the innovatively designed par-3 course were part of Colwood Golf Center’s initial improvements, and have appealed to a wide variety of guests for the past three years.

    Since the initial property redesign began, Colwood Golf Center has been continuously making facility improvements. The second phase of this improvement project was completed in the spring of 2017, and included significant investment in infrastructure upgrades: removal of existing site septic systems and construction of an approximately quarter mile sanitary sewer (which increased water quality protection of the Columbia Slough and other adjacent waterways), pedestrian enhancements to the right-of-way that increases safety through new lighting and new sidewalks, the addition of an outdoor event space featuring sweeping views of the new patio, driving range and golf course. The project expanded the Colwood driving range, adding more hitting stalls and a large patio area for outdoor dining, lights, and new grass tees. Colwood’s parking lot enjoyed a repaving, new lights for safety, and enhanced landscaping increased the site’s aesthetics.

    In addition to these recent facility improvements, Colwood Golf Center is home to the Colwood Grill and Columbia Room banquet space. Both segments of the operation feature improved menus and best in class service, as Colwood has become a popular event venue in Northeast Portland.

    Colwood Golf Center is also a host facility for the First Tee of Greater Portland, with offices, programming, and dedicated facilities on-site.

    Artist Crystal Schenk presents I’m Not a Barnacle, I’m Just a Boy at the Portland Building Installation Space, June 5 – June 30

    Portland, Ore – RACC is pleased to present a new work by sculptor and installation artist Crystal Schenk in the Installation Space located adjacent to the Portland Building lobby. I’m Not a Barnacle, I’m Just a Boy, opens June 5 and features an arresting sculpture that asks the viewer to look beyond their common understanding into the complexities of the mother/child relationship.

    Schenk’s project is an expansive ceramic piece recently completed during her artist residency at Leland Iron Works in Oregon City. The work consists of a field of rocks—each handmade with black clay—which are smooth and satiny, as if tumbled by the sea. Over these rocks large white porcelain barnacles appear to have fastened themselves. The center of the field reveals a sculpture of her three-year-old son, also made in black clay with barnacles growing on his body.

    “I like to let one material mimic and charade as another—as the process of discovery lends to an unfolding of understanding.” Schenk says. “Although some species of barnacle are parasitic, most are so harmless their hosts may not even notice them growing to cover their bodies. My relationship to my son has been similar. Starting as an almost unnoticeable seed in my body, he soon grew to take it over—and once on the outside he has been continuously attached to me, even now at three years old. This work was inspired by a moment while we were beachcombing, when he randomly told me, ‘Momma, I’m not a barnacle. I’m just a boy.’ The sculpture exposes my mixed emotions to being a parent, and my bond with this tiny being who is both autonomous and vaguely parasitic.”

    About the Artist: Crystal Schenk has a labor-intensive and detail-oriented way of working, in which craftsmanship and material choices play a large role. Her mediums vary as she relies on a combination of material meaning and personal/cultural iconography to build concept. Her work incorporates a wide range of skills, including welding, stained glass, woodworking, crochet, beading, and casting to name a few. Woven through what may initially appear as visually disparate works are common themes of class structure, heritage, and the fluctuating perceptions of memory.

    Schenk received an MFA from Portland State University in 2007, and a BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1999. She lives and works in Portland, Oregon and is an adjunct professor at Pacific Northwest College of Art and Portland State University. She was awarded the International Sculpture Center's Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award for 2006, and was selected as the recipient of ISC’s residency program at Art-st-urban in Switzerland. In 2009 Art-st-urban awarded Schenk with the institution’s first Emerging Sculptor Award, and represented her at Art Basel in 2013 and Open 18 in Venice Italy in 2015. Locally, Schenk’s work was represented at the Oregon biennial, Portland 2010, and has been exhibited at Bullseye and Linfield galleries. This All Happened More or Less, a public art commission Schenk completed with Shelby Davis in SE Portland was recently recognized by Americans for the Arts one of 2014’s top public projects nationwide.

    Portland Chef Vanessa Basil has established a new company, Custom Cuisines LLC, (Custom Cuisines) to provide personal culinary services in-home using client-provided supplies and equipment.

    “This is not catering.” says Basil. “We do not have pre-set menus and we do not have delivery charges. Instead, we cook your food in your kitchen either with you or on our own.”

    Custom Cuisines provides individualized service to people who want help with mealtimes or special occasions. Relationships with their clients revolve around the clients’ food preferences, dietary needs, and physical limitations.
